From Free Tomatoes to a New Home

September 4th, 2008
My local grocery store has been doing this new style of promotion. For every $60.00 you spend, you get a free “item of the week.” Sometimes it’s a carton of eggs, other times it’s yoghurt, or an English cucumber or a basket of plums…you get the idea. Not only has this increased my loyalty to this grocery store, but this promotion has influenced me to buy a little more than I set out to purchase, because I want to get the free item of the week. If I have a $55.00 grocery order, I will tend to top up the order and spend the extra $5.00 so I can get something for free. “Free” is a very powerful word. In reality, I am spending and extra $5.00 for a $1.00 or $2.00 item. It would be cheaper if I just bought the “free” item! The truth is that everyone wants to feel like a winner and everyone likes to get something for nothing. Remember that philosophy when organizing your fundraiser events.

But I digress, as this is not the main moral to today’s marketing story. One day, several months ago, I was checking out my grocery order at this particular store when I heard the lady at the next cash say “I get three boxes of tomatoes? What am I going to do with three boxes of tomatoes?!” She turned around and offered me two of her three boxes of tomatoes. A perfect stranger gave me vegetables; that doesn’t happen every day.

Frankly, I was shocked that anyone would give their free item of the week to a complete stranger. Call me selfish, but if it had been me, I would’ve taken all three boxes home and made bruschetta or tomato soup or a spaghetti sauce, or alternatively, I would have called my parents to ask if they needed tomatoes. I was shocked at this woman’s random act of kindness.

As I looked at her to accept her considerate offer, I recognized her. My “Tomato Lady” was in fact a local realtor who had recently opened up her own real estate company. Her ads were in the community paper as well as the Jewish weekly. Her business cards were strategically placed at my nail salon. Her signs were all over the neighbourhood too.

“Are you Heidi?” I asked. “Are you in real estate?” I inquired. “Yes, how did you know?” she responded. “Your ads are EVERYWHERE.” I said matter-of-factly. “May I have your business card?”
